Acting on behalf of TREC Capital, Mosaic Architecture + Design, one of Scotland’s most experienced practices, has submitted a planning application to develop best-in-class purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) at Princes House on the corner of Waterloo Street and West Campbell Street in Glasgow city centre.
The proposals involve the demolition of the existing vacant office building to allow for redevelopment to provide a 15-storey facility with 287-unit purpose-built student accommodation, associated landscaping, access and infrastructure.
The scheme will provide contemporary student accommodation, comprising a mix of cluster rooms and studio types, with a variety of internal and external amenity spaces, including study rooms, a variety of break-out and social spaces and communal roof terraces tailored to meet the needs of future residents.
Neil Haining, director of Mosaic Architecture and Design, said:
“This development, which will help re-populate the city centre and provide a new use on an under-used site, will provide new best-in-class PBSA, of which there is a clear shortage of in this part of the city.
“It has been carefully designed in response to the site’s immediate context and the surrounding townscape in this part of the city and provides a new urban block with appropriate scale and quality of materials.
“The building will be equipped with a variety of outstanding facilities for residents, centred around the main social hub and spacious common room, with study areas, a large games room, a state-of-the-art gym, and an on-site cinema room.
“The primary entrance is located on the corner of Waterloo Street and West Campbell Street which leads into the main amenity space on ground floor as well as higher level roof terraces designed to ensure they are used as part of the everyday life of the building.”
Andrew White, development manager for TREC Capital, added: “I am delighted to be involved in the redevelopment of this prime city centre site. The existing building frame is structurally compromised, and the internal layout is unsuitable for conversion, making redevelopment the only option.
“I am looking forward to delivering a new state-of-the-art student accommodation building that provides a strong interactive frontage to the corner of Waterloo Street and West Campbell Street.”
The development’s proposed amenity areas have been designed to create a vibrant and engaging environment to enrich daily life and foster a strong sense of community within the building
