Eighteen years after the initial design package, Cheshire based T-T Pumps is celebrating the completion of a complex pumping station refurbishment for Transport for London as part of the Thames Tideway Scheme.
Located at the famous Blackfriars Bridge on the Tidal Thames, the dual chamber station upgrade forms part of wider Thames Tideway works implemented to modernise London’s 150-year-old combined sewer network and intercept overflows when the system is overwhelmed by rainwater.
To minimise travel disruptions in the high traffic area, the refurbishment was scheduled to coincide with Thames Tideway works happening at Blackfriars Bridge. Although this increased logistical complexity, T-T’s project management expertise and close relationships with their supply chain allowed them to deliver a high-quality pumping station upgrade within the client’s specified timeframe.
Working to critical site specifications provided by Transport for London, T-T undertook a complete overhaul of the station’s existing infrastructure, specifying and installing new pumps, kiosks, valves and completing major pipework rerouting to accommodate future maintenance needs.
Before work on the site began, T-T’s engineers assessed the station’s duty point and installed an appropriate over-pumping system to ensure that waste management services continued uninterrupted until the refurbishments were commissioned.
ATEX rated submersible pumps were chosen for the station due to the potential for fuel run-off to enter the combined pumping system via surface water – while a complete waterworks valve package was specified for critical backflow prevention, pipeline isolation and pressure regulation to ensure effective operation.
T-T’s electro-mechanical engineers completed the design, assembly, wiring and testing of the station’s new dual motor control centre. This included provisions for gas detection, a forced ventilation system and a walk-in GRP kiosk with textured wood-effect doors in keeping with the bridge’s aesthetic.
In order to overcome site restrictions caused by ongoing Thames Tideway works, the control panel kiosk was supplied flat-packed and constructed upon delivery to the site and all custom pipework was fabricated during the installation phase of the project.
The team also oversaw the removal of all redundant equipment that they replaced within the pumping station, leaving the site clear for Thames Tideway operatives to continue their work.
T-T Controls Manager Jane Delicata commented: “Being involved in this project, from its inception through to final handover to the end maintainer nearly two decades later, shows our ability to react to changing specifications whilst still delivering high-quality systems. Everyone at T-T was proud to be part of such a monumental effort to protect the River Thames from pollution.”
