As The FIFA World Cup 2022 host, Doha has started the expansion of the Hamad International Airport (HIA) Central Concourse Project in 2019 to accommodate more than 58 million passengers annually. The project is completed and opened in November 2022.
Located south of Doha, HIA connects itself to the world as an international hub. HIA is set to further redefine the passenger experience, through this new expansion project, delivering a vibrant destination in Qatar. The project consists of two phases of development. The completed Phase 1 development includes a central concourse that is expanded from the existing terminal, linking to the North Node. The combined first and second phases of the expansion will provide an additional 24 contact stands and 22 bus gates, allowing the terminal to operate at more than double its current.
To design a humane airport infrastructure, the expansion project emphasises ecology and sustainability. The expansion includes an indoor tropical garden spanning all 3 floors, showcasing sustainably sourced greenery in a spacious interior. Aedas Executive Principal Simon Griffiths commented, “We are delighted to have participated in the central concourse expansion project, designing an awarded and sustainable terminal opened in time to provide a new and unique gateway experience to passengers for The FIFA World Cup and future large-scale international events.”
