A new ageing and living development in Central Newcastle has been granted Outline Planning Permission, following an application submitted by National architecture practice, GSSArchitecture.
Known as the Campus for Ageing and Vitality (CAV), the multi-million-pound development that is being led by Newcastle University will be situated on a 29-acre brown-field former hospital site and will encompass a range of uses that will bring together world-leading academics, industry, public sector and local communities to help find solutions to complex challenges of an ageing population.
GSSArchitecture have been working closely with Newcastle University and its partners to develop the plans that will establish this site as the world’s premier centre for healthy ageing and living.
Jonathan Hunter, partner and project lead at GSS said,
“It is great to see that the plans have been approved for this exciting, global exemplar development which will bring together multi-generational residential, research and commercial facilities. Newcastle already has a strong reputation as a leader in innovation, evaluation and dissemination of new technologies and lifestyle approaches for an aging population, and this scheme will allow the city to further build on this. With approximately 25% of the UK population aged over 60, and with this figure predicted to rise significantly by 2040, the CAV site will stimulate a renewed focus on the challenges ageing brings, including early prevention and diagnosis of chronic diseases, and improved management of multi-morbidity.”
GSSArchitecture are delighted to have developed the masterplan for the site so far and look forward to moving forwards with the scheme alongside Genr8 Kajima Regeneration Ltd, who have been selected as preferred bidder for the principal development partner by Newcastle University.
