Dulux: Helping you design education spaces

A recent study as part of the Holistic Evidence & Design project found that well-designed primary schools boost children’s academic performance, with differences in classroom characteristics accounting for 16% of progress in reading, writing and maths over the course of a year. It is therefore vital that colour and design are carefully considered.

It’s also important to remember that not every child is the same, and some have different behavioural and educational needs to others, so making sure classroom designs cater for a broad spectrum of needs is crucial.

Zoning for education spaces

A good way of making sure most needs are catered for is by separating a room into zones. For instance, implementing a welcome zone with warm tones like soft greens and blues can help anxious students immediately feel at ease when entering the space. Whilst using colours like vibrant oranges or lively yellows in a play or activity zone can inspire imagination and engagement. Additionally, painting the teaching wall in a stronger colour to the main walls can help draw the students’ attention and boost focus.
