Part-public part-private forestry group Coillte has confirmed it’s seeking additional warehousing capacity in the UK in case of a ‘hard Brexit’ resulting from no deal being struck with the EU, in order to stockpile three months’ worth of timber products.
The Irish Times has reported that Coillte are concerned that a hard Brexit could “severely disrupt its logistics chain,” and that the firm is looking to minimise the likely impact that a lack of trade deal would bring to its customers.
72 per cent of Coillte’s products are exported to the UK, with around an additional 10 per cent moved by road through Britain for continental European markets.
It has also been reported that the company are looking at the feasibility of using Northern Ireland as a ‘land bridge’ to its customers in Britain, as well as moving from truck deliveries to “whole-ship movements.”
