CIAT reaccreditation for Architectural Technology programme

The University of Huddersfield’s Architectural Technology programme has received its re-accreditation certificate from the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).

The BSc (Hons) in Architectural Technology runs alongside BA (Hons) Architecture, with both courses continuing the University’s outstanding, decades-long reputation in the profession.

Students share modules across both degrees alongside other built environment courses such as Quantity Surveying and Construction Project Management, giving them a rounded view of what to expect when working in the industry.

“We are trying to mimic the real-life atmosphere of practice in our learning here,” says Dr Ahmed Hassan, Course Leader.

“Architecture students would traditionally learn about design, art, history, theories, philosophy and aesthetics of architecture. Technologists would focus on the anatomy and physiology of buildings in terms of their structures and systems, underpinned by science, architectural engineering and technology.

“In our Architectural Technology education in the University of Huddersfield, we want both Architecture and Architectural Technology students to see technology from the combined perspective of art and science while enjoying studying buildings from a technological standpoint.”

Current students were tasked recently with discovering more about the University’s campus buildings, especially the Barbara Hepworth Building where their course is based, and were encouraged to look at it from technological and artistic viewpoints.

Dr Hassan adds, “Students were able to learn how to see, identify, analyse and sketch building components, systems and materials on the go. This real-life building inspection and detailing workshop provided students with hands-on experience, enhanced their observational and analytical skills, and deepened their knowledge of building materials, construction methods and structural systems.

“They loved it, we wanted them to really think about what was going on under their feet in a building they have got to know very well.

“This re-accreditation is fantastic news. This outstanding achievement is a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of our faculty, staff, and students.

“Our programme’s re-accreditation signifies our continued adherence to the highest standards of academic excellence and industry-relevant curriculum, ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared for the demands and challenges of the architectural technology profession. The successful re-accreditation process also highlights the collaborative efforts of our faculty in maintaining an engaging and supportive learning environment for our students.

“This is a good opportunity to thank our past and current colleagues who contributed to this remarkable achievement. Their tireless efforts in delivering high-quality education, fostering innovation and guiding our students deserve the highest recognition. Their contributions have laid the groundwork for our continued success. I am confident that we will continue to build upon this accomplishment, further elevating our programme’s stature and reputation.”
