Case Study: The Stage, Shoreditch, London

The Stage is a 540,000 sq ft mixed-use development in Shoreditch, London EC2. The project consists of a new 37-storey residential tower and theatre, as well as two office buildings providing 25,000m², ca 4,500m² of shops and restaurants on a 2.5-acre site in Shoreditch, East London.

Approximately 1200 metres of ONLEVEL balustrade channel was installed at The Stage development, 609 balconies in total, providing outdoor living areas for many of the luxurious apartments.

Set for completion in 2022, The stage is billed as ‘the finest residential opportunity in the capital’ with 412 private, residential apartments and a range of facilities. The Stage will incorporate the remains of Shakespeare’s Curtain Theatre, a 16th century playhouse where some of his famous plays, including Romeo and Juliet, were first performed. The remains of the theatre will be preserved and showcased at a visitor centre.

Architectural Metalwork and Balcony Specialists Barretts of Aspley installed the balustrading using ONLEVEL’s surface mounted TL-6010 base channel. Chosen for its slim design, affordability, and aesthetic benefits, it can withstand a linear load of 0.74kN and can accommodate glass thicknesses between 12 mm and 21.52 mm.

The TL-6011 profile was also chosen for the project, It’s an intelligent solution for easy mounting without screed on steel or concrete. The profile can be used both indoors and outdoors and withstands a linear load of 0.74kN and can accommodate glass thicknesses between 12 mm and 21.52 mm. ONLEVEL’s TL-6030 profile was also used on the project, it can withstand a linear load of 3.0 kN and can accommodate glass thicknesses between 21.52 mm and 31.52 mm.

Glass was fitted into the profiles using Flex-Fit, Flex-Fit is ONLEVEL’s innovative system for adjusting glass panels. With this system it was possible to adjust each individual glass plate up to 40 millimetres towards the perpendicular line.

It was the perfect solution for safe alignment of the balconies glass balustrades. With just a simple sliding movement the installer was able to precisely position glass and reduce the assembly time by some 30%.

In addition, Flex-Fit is safer than traditional glass balustrade fixing solutions which often require you to work from both the balcony side and the void side to adjust the glass once installed. Flex-Fit can be fully operated from the balcony side. Not only is this safer, rental costs for scaffolding or a cherry picker can be reduced.

Katie Shaw, Project Co-ordinator, ONLEVEL UK, commented,

“Although it can be quite stressful being part of such a high profile luxurious project like The Stage, I was confident that once our client had our systems onsite the quality and usability of our products would show. We all at ONLEVEL are so proud to be able to see our systems on such amazing projects”
