The benefits of utilising a bespoke attenuation solution from Polypipe, the UK’s leading manufacturer of plastic sustainable drainage and water management products, have been demonstrated during a large-scale housing development near Penrith.
By involving Polypipe’s water management specialists early in the project, Story Homes achieved an underground attenuation solution which met the exact needs of their development. Furthermore the system was quickly accepted by United Utilities for inclusion into a Section 104 agreement.
Polypipe offered a value engineered solution for the Clifton Hill Gardens development which was an attenuation tank designed within a Public Open Space to create a storage capacity of 95m3. The multi-leg attenuation tank was created from Polypipe’s market-leading 1200mm Ridgistorm-XL large diameter pipe system, incorporating a range of prefabricated fittings including a 1500mm diameter offset chamber and a 1500mm diameter Storm Check Vortex Flow Control Chamber set to the site’s required discharge rate.
The Ridgistorm-XL system was installed using Polypipe’s unique electro-fusion welding process. Whilst the original specification required the manufacturer to join the pipes once installed, Polypipe’s electro-fusion jointing method negated this need and the Story Construction team were able to carry out the welding process themselves, speeding up the installation and reducing the work that needed to be undertaken within the confined space.
Malcolm Lamont, a Project Manager for Story Contracting, another Story owned business, said: “Our original design involved a separate concrete chamber and manholes, which would have required substantially more time and equipment to install than the solution designed by Polypipe. Polypipe were able to design-out the separate concrete chambers and incorporate them into the tank which was quick and easy to install creating some cost saving opportunities.”
Emma Nicholls, Marketing Communications Manager at Polypipe, added: “We pride ourselves on our ability to value engineer solutions which don’t just meet the needs of our customers and legislation, but contribute valuable savings in time, cost and also space. We were delighted Story Homes sought our expertise for their latest development in Cumbria and look forward to working with them in the future.”
