New life injected into aging retirement development

A 40-year-old retirement development in Haxby, on the outskirts of York, has been completely redeveloped following a £423,000 investment that has transformed the aging development into one of the region’s most innovative and modern schemes of its kind.

Hanover Court consists of 30, one bedroom apartments, that were built in 1973 for the over 60s to buy or rent. The development is owned by Hanover Housing Association, which appointed Leeds based Brewster Bye Architects to oversee an extensive redevelopment programme including the significant improvement of the development’s appearance, making all the homes more energy efficient and installing new external lighting.

In addition, the development’s landscaped areas have been completely redesigned and a new residents’ communal day room with kitchenette has been built. The work took approximately six months and Esh Property Services were the lead contractor on the project.

Mark Henderson, a director at Brewster Bye Architects, said:

“Hanover Court has a fantastic community of residents, plenty of outdoor space and is located in a popular suburb of York so it offered a huge amount of potential in terms of how it could be modernised and improved. First of all we made major upgrades to the external wall insulation, which also enhanced the property’s appearance, by covering the original grey rendered walls with brick slips for the ground floors and cream render for the first floors.”

“We also installed new energy efficient and secure windows and doors, and first floor residents now benefit from Juliet balconies. Outside the whole development now has new LED dusk till dawn lighting and a soft and hard landscaped area with integrated communal seating which is all complimented by the superb new dayroom. All this combines to make Hanover Court a highly sought after place to live.”
