Multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Hilson Moran continues to strengthen its prominence in the university sector, with a recent appointment by one of the UK’s leading universities and the completion of work at Royal Holloway, University of London.
Hilson Moran has been appointed to Lancaster University’s M&E engineering services framework as part of an overarching scheme to redevelop its campus, particularly its student accommodation. Hilson Moran will work with Lancaster University to enhance the University’s kitchen and washroom facilities, creating a more modern and tailored student experience and supporting the University’s aim to cater more closely to the needs of students in order to attract today’s brightest minds.
Acting as M&E consultants for the project, the consultancy will work across three student accommodation facilities: the Kent building, the Wyre building and the Lune building, ensuring performance parameters are met throughout the renovation process. In addition, Hilson Moran will play a key role in drainage, ventilation, heating, power, water, fire protection and lighting works on all three sites.
The engineering consultancy was also appointed to redevelop a section of the public space at Royal Holloway which finished in early 2017. Hilson Moran was brought onto the project to create an iconic café in the grounds of the former Boilerhouse in conjunction with architects Cartwright Pickard. It provided performance specifications for M&E services and sustainability, which included a low carbon ground source heat pump heating system, as well as BREEAM consultation. Given its all glass design, dynamic thermal modelling was undertaken to provide advice on the glazing and external shading as well as the ventilation strategy included to ensure the impact on the internal environmental impacts were taken into consideration.
The new café is nestled into the historic boilerhouse, with external lighting used to enhance its iconic chimney. To meet the lighting needs of the project and showcase its design brilliance, Hilson Moran worked with a lighting specialist, Light Bureau.
Hilson Moran has had great success in the higher education sector, working with various UK universities, including the University of Surrey, London Metropolitan University, and Cambridge University.
