Building with brick slips can be faster and more economical than using traditional bricks. At the uber hip Ace Hotel in trendy Shoreditch, a dreary, blocky business hotel was transformed using a combination of Ketley’s Staffordshire Blue brick slips, solid bricks and specials to clad the ground-floor walls and reconnect the building with the Shoreditch streetscape. Ketley’s blue brick, together with great craftsmanship, gave the building an “uber-cool” feel and created a sleek and modern look which won a prestigious Brick Award last November for Best Refurbishment and Renovation.
Ketley’s brick slips are a highly durable, sustainable and cost effective cladding solution to create authentic brick facades for both external and internal applications. They are made in the UK from the same clay, using the same processes as Ketley Class A engineering bricks to deliver the same technical characteristics of very low water absorption, very high strength and unrivalled frost resistance. Extruded at 18mm thick, they eliminate the need and cost to cut down bricks and use only 30% of the embodied carbon of a cut brick. All the colours are achieved naturally through the careful control of the kiln atmosphere without the use of surface pigments or artificial stains. This generates a warmth and authenticity to the brick colours which cannot be matched. All 6 colours are available in a choice of smooth, sanded or textured, or drag wire finish.
Extruded pistol bricks for corners and returns, fired alongside the slips to ensure consistancy of colour, complement the range. Two different types of reverse keys are available for the slips depending on their application. There is a ribbed key suitable for adhesive fixing and a dovetail key which has been specially developed for use with pre-cast concrete panels.
