Tired of golf balls damaging the slates on the main golf club house roof, owners of Kingswood Golf Club in Surrey chose IKOslate composite roof tiles for the pitched roof of ‘The Lodge’, a new wing to the club situated on the edge of the course by the 18th hole. IKOslate not only met local planning criteria but also replicated the traditional slate tiles of the existing buildings whilst providing a robust, sustainable alternative to slate, which is golf ball proof!
The Lodge, a double storey building, features 18 contemporary bedrooms and a new Pro Shop, which links the existing club house with the new hotel. The specifier, Independent Architects, chose the IKOslate tile in order to reduce the need for replacement tiles as well as to meet the local planning criteria for a tile that matched the appearance of the surrounding buildings. The prominent pitched roofs on all sides of the building and individual dormer windows for guest bedrooms made the roof design a dominant element of the architectural solution.
IKOslate tiles, manufactured from mineral reinforced, 99% recycled and re-engineered materials, have the same aesthetic qualities as slate because they are made in the same moulds, however, they benefit from being 80% lighter, which makes transporting to and around site much easier.
Prior to installing the slates, an eaves protection system was fixed followed by a breather membrane, which was laid along the rafters. The IKOslate was then nailed to the slate battens. Unlike natural slate, IKOslate can be installed using power tools. Tiles can be nailed down using a hammer or nail gun and they can be cut with a hacksaw. Markers on each tile indicate where the exposure lap should be.
Local contractor P J Gardner felt that IKOslate was easier to use in every way and quicker to install than traditional slate. The job was completed in just 4 weeks from start to finish.
General Manager of Kingswood Golf Club said,
“The use of IKOslate has far exceeded our expectations. We wanted something that give us a specific look and feel but remained sympathetic to what we already have. IKOslate has proved to be the answer!”
All materials for the IKOslate system were chosen and bought locally through Buildbase in Kingswood.
