Two months ago Goldsmiths launched a competition for architects to register their interest in the project to build an Art Gallery at Goldsmiths. The competition jury – which includes Antony Gormley and David Chipperfield – has now shortlisted six companies from more than 80 expressions of interest.
The firms now have six weeks to submit designs for the proposed 400m2 Gallery which aims to become a significant showcase for contemporary art in London.
The Gallery will be located at the back of the Laurie Grove Baths, a Grade II listed 19th-century municipal baths, now converted into studios for Goldsmiths’ Masters in Fine Art students. It will make a hugely beneficial impact on the life of the University, through a combination of curated exhibitions, residencies and research projects.
Anja Soetbeer, Head of Capital Projects at Goldsmiths, commented:
“The panel was delighted with the expressions of interest and after lengthy debate we are pleased to present this shortlist. We are now looking forward to seeing some inspirational designs.”
As a University, Goldsmiths has been at the forefront of innovative art and culture in Britain for more than a century and over the last 25 years its graduates have been instrumental in the transformation of visual art in Britain.
