Gerflor delivers caring solution in Northern Ireland

South-East of Belfast in County Down, Northern Ireland nestles the small village of Castlewellan. With its tree-lined squares and tranquil setting, it’s the perfect location for a care home.

Corriewood Private Clinic in Castlewellan is a friendly, well-managed healthcare facility that takes pride in responding to the individual needs of their residents at all times, providing an environment where comfort, courtesy and dignity really matter.

When it came to producing this new build they wanted to ensure that the flooring would meet the high values they had already set for the building. International flooring and interiors specialists Gerflor were chosen by Dungannon-based Dynes Flooring Contractors Ltd to deliver the high standard of flooring needed.

As a true healthcare multi-specialist and with over sixty years’ healthcare experience, Gerflor has grown and developed to become an expert in this field by creating, manufacturing and marketing innovative, decorative, durable, hygienic and environmentallyresponsible flooring for a host of healthcare-related solutions.

A total of 2000m2 of Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Compact would be needed to fulfil this challenging project. The new Taralay Impression range is a specifier’s and designer’s delight. The Corriewood Care Home wanted a flooring that would look warm and non-institutional, but at the same time deliver a non-slip safety solution.

Philip Dynes, Director and Contracts Manager at Dynes Flooring Contractors Ltd commented,

“The client had experienced problems with a poor installation on underfloor heating and a badly performing, incorrectly specified product in terms of maintenance at other premises. They sought advice from us regarding our proposals for the specification of a product which would be both highly decorative and fit-for-purpose”.

Philip Dynes went on to further comment,

“We advised and worked with their interior design team and successfully installed all flooring to their requirements over a liquid hemihydrate calcium sulphate screed with an underfloor heating system”.

He also added,

“Gerflor’s Taralay Impression Compact was chosen for all the bedrooms and corridors. Gerflor’s Tarasafe Ultra H2O in various colours was also laid to the assisted bath/shower rooms and ensuites, with Tarasafe Ultra specified for all cleaning storerooms and sluice rooms”.

Taralay Impression Compact comprises a compacted backing reinforced with glass fibre and has a printed design protected by a transparent wear layer 0.7mm thick. It offers 8dB sound insulation and indentation resistance of 0.03mm. Taralay Impression Compact is also treated with Protecsol®, which renders acrylic polishes obsolete, and is fungistatic and anti-bacterial protected to MRSA (3) ISO 22196 which inhibits growth for maximum hygiene. Backed by a 10-year warranty, the product does not contain any heavy metals, is 100 per cent compliant with REACH and emission levels are < 70 μg/m³.

The project would also require the new flooring to look modern without appearing garish.

For designers, the Taralay Impression range offers 160 references, of which 110 are new. They include 21 wood-effect references, covering the spectrum of wood colours, in 10 designs. Gerflor has also added contemporary textile, neutral-mineral and patterned references to allow designers free rein to create moods, add signature colours and compliment other design aspects of the healthcare facility.

Philp Dynes went on to add,

“The design team and client were very impressed with the Taralay Impression range in terms of visual appearance as it has less of an institutional or hospital feel, giving a homely effect for their residents. Resilience, easy maintenance, compatibility with the underfloor heating system and a problem-free installation have all contributed to their intention to continue with the specification of the product in the next phase of the development”.
