China’s largest developer signs construction contract with AECOM Tishman for Spire London

Leading Chinese developer Greenland Group has today announced that is has selected multi-national engineering and construction group AECOM as the preferred construction partner for the groundbreaking £800m Spire London development.

Spire London is set to be the tallest residential tower in western Europe, standing at a remarkable 235.145 metres (771ft) high, and it is already well into its first construction phase. Work will start on the basement and main build by the end of 2017. AECOM will bring the expertise of its high-rise construction business AECOM Tishman, which recently completed the new 1,776 ft tall One World Trade Centre, to lead the delivery of this major development.

The signing took place on 24th May, and was carried out in the presence of one of Greenland Group’s Vice-Presidents, Xinyu Lu, and Group President of AECOM Construction Services, Dan McQuade, who flew to London from Shanghai and New York respectively. AECOM is a multi-disciplinary firm that has the capability to see through the entire life cycle of a skyscraper development, such as Spire London, and has already provided support on this project.

Wenhao Qian, Managing Director of Greenland (UK) Investments Ltd, said:

“Spire London is set to become one of London’s iconic, landmark buildings, and it is vital that we have the right team in place that can deliver a project of this scale. AECOM has been a trusted partner for Greenland on our extensive portfolio, and we are delighted to have awarded them the Pre-Construction Services Agreement for the main construction works. We look forward to building our relationship with them as we work together to bring Spire London to life.”

Dan McQuade, Group President of AECOM Construction Services, said:

“We are very excited to work with Greenland on this iconic project in the heart of London’s Docklands. It will be our fifth project working together across the globe, and we look forward to further strengthening our relationship and helping Greenland to bring their vision to life”.

Spire London is 67-storeys high, providing 861 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments and penthouses, 765 of which are available for private sale. It has been designed by architects Larry Malcic and Christopher Colosimo of multi-award-winning architectural practice HoK, along with leading interior designer Nicola Fontanella of Argent.

Spire London’s construction continues on schedule and leading foundations specialist Bachy Soletanche, the appointed pilings contractor, is due to complete works by November 2017. Bachy Soletanche is responsible for delivering the geotechnical package on the development, and has set a new UK record for static load testing of piled foundations, achieving a maximum loading force in excess of 100 MN, using the Osterberg Cell® technique.

In addition, on 19th May, Greenland Group signed a Pre-Construction Services Agreement with Permasteelisa Group, one of Europe’s top cladding contractors. The cladding contract is one of the largest construction packages for the project.

Spire London is scheduled for completion Q4 2020. Signing the PCSA with AECOM marks another milestone in the development’s construction. Greenland Group is China’s premier residential property developer and is focused on creating homes and projects of distinction. Spire London will be no exception.
